As Chancellor George Osborne prepares to announce his budget for the coming year, the chances are that at least a little part of it will focus on the concept of saving.

From reducing the amount of energy we use to spending less on food and drink, there are a number of ways that can cut the levels of money we spend regularly.

Saving a little here and there can quickly build up and by making a few concerted efforts you can rapidly increase your funding pot.

Many of the suggestions require very little in terms of effort, meaning you can save the pennies without dramatically altering your lifestyle.

Wasting water

Waiting for water to heat up when cooking or when running a bath can take a considerable amount of time, so leaving the water running for less can help you save.

Turning off the shower when you apply shower gel could halve the amount of water you use, while it also means less energy is required to heat the water.

Using a kettle to boil water for cooking can also save on the amount of energy required, reducing your bill provided your kettle is energy-efficient.

Batch cooking

Cooking for one or two people represents the perfect way to save on both time and money, as you can cook for more people and then save the leftovers in the fridge or freezer for another day.

It effectively means that you cut the amount you time you need to be cooking, reducing your energy consumption and giving you time to do other things.

Buying meat and other fresh food that can be frozen when it is close to its best before date can also save money, as most supermarkets will put significant discounts in place in order to sell it.

In the cases of pizzas and ready meals this is especially true, but it is also a way to purchase meat for less.

When time allows, do more things yourself and it’s also possible to save.

Money management solutions

Financial management is extremely important, so keeping your spending in check with a prepaid card is a great way of ensuring you don’t spend more than you would like.

A prepaid card limits spending to the amount on the card at any given moment and is not directly linked to a bank account, making funds safer.

The cards can easily be topped up or replaced if required, while accounts can be checked regularly online if needed.

It represents an ideal solution if you’re determined to make a saving on everyday items.
