The simple and definitive answer to that question is NO.
With the rapid growth and emergence of prepaid MasterCard cards and a few prepaid Visa card products in the UK, a number of consumers are enquiring about the existence of American Express (AMEX) prepaid cards.
Unfortunately, American Express do not offer a prepaid card in the UK or in the US at this point.
The only options are either a American Express Prepaid gift card or a free American Express rewards card. They did offer a Travellers Cheque card for a short while but this was withdrawn from the market and is no longer available. This may have been due to an internal decision or possible cannibalisation of their foreign exchange market.
Whatever the reason, the only product out there seems to be an American Express Prepaid Gift card for the US market.
American Express also ran some tests with a contactless payments key fob called Express Pay but these tests and the programmes were ditched in March 2008 and the product was withdrawn from the market. Find the complete story here.
So for UK consumers, the only options for prepaid cards at the moment are prepaid Maestro, MasterCard and a few Visa card products but lets watch this space and see what American Express do next.
