Making purchasing decisions after we’ve supped on an alcoholic beverage or two is probably not the wisest of moves, but when has that ever stopped shopping-mad Brits?

According to a new survey conducted by Confused.com, inebriated Brits are splashing their cash online to the average tune of £142, with their list of purchases including items that could comfortably be described as less than essential.

The survey revealed that one in five customers have admitted to putting purchases on plastic after having a tipple, splashing out between £100 and £200. One in 20 have gone even further and hit their wallets to the tune of more than £500 on these purchases.

With a range of modern gadgetry so widely available, it is no wonder that Brits are ordering items at such a rapid rate. However, the statistics surrounding the scale of these haphazard purchases is quite staggering.

Amazon accounts for majority of online sprees

Further figures from the survey revealed that the majority (53%) of these impromptu purchases take place on Amazon, with clothes proving to be by far the most popular item.

18% of the 2,000 people questioned as part of the survey revealed that they had purchased a holiday while being intoxicated, while 6% splashed out on a new TV or phone.

The list of purchases continued with items ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous, including:

  • Lobster pots
  • Pie maker
  • Diving equipment
  • A folding ladder
  • A washing machine.

Nerys Lewis, head of credit cards at Confused.com, said: “Consumers need to be careful that purchases made when drunk don’t cause them financial problems in the future.

“With the last bank holiday of the summer coming up, Brits might be even more tempted to go out and have a few drinks.

“While people may wake up the next day and have a good laugh about the purchase they’ve made when drunk, these purchases could cause problems further down the line.”

Amit Sharma, CEO at Prepaid365.com, said: “This is exactly the kind of situation where a prepaid card in hand might be better than a high limit credit card. Whilst it is never good to make any sort of decision, purchase or otherwise, under the influence of alcohol; at least with a prepaid card, your ‘tipsy losses’ are limited to the funds that your have on your card”

Spending within your means

Using a prepaid online shopping card for your purchases could help you to spend within your means. While you are at over 30 million merchants worldwide that accept Mastercard/VISA and over 2 million ATMs to make withdrawals, you can only spend the amount that is loaded onto your card. This is a great advantage for anyone who is keen to budget more effectively.

However, should you need access to extra cash, you can top up your funds online at any time.
